Firm or semi-firm mattress: you just can't decide? We'll explain everything!

Sleep plays an essential role in your daily well-being. Quality sleep is also vital for good health and, above all, for staying healthy. Obviously, it's important to have a healthy lifestyle and get enough sleep.

In order to achieve this you need bedding that provides maximum comfort for your sleep needs. With so many options on the market, choosing a mattress isn't just a matter of taste! So how do you choose your mattress? First and foremost, by determining its level of firmness and what works for you!

What is a firm or semi-firm mattress?

With the exception of entry-level models, a mattress is always made up of two distinct parts:
• The base - the top layer on which you lie;
• The core - the filling, in other words the heart of the mattress, which provides support. The core is usually made of visco-elastic memory foam or springs, with hybrid mattresses being a combination of both.

Usually only a few centimetres thick, this layer provides an enveloping welcoming feel when you lie down.

It's thanks to this layer that you can now enjoy comfort that's both supple and firm at the same time!

When should you choose a firm or medium-firm mattress?

The firmness of a mattress is not just a matter of taste: good support is essential for a good night's sleep. In other words, you need to choose a mattress that is adapted to your body shape, taking into account two criteria in particular:
Your height;
Your weight.

It's also important to take into account your sleeping habits, and more specifically your preferred sleeping position. And, of course, you should also carefully select your pillows according to these same criteria, to ensure absolute comfort!

A firm to medium-firm mattress is recommended for people of large build and/or height. It's also advisable to opt for a firm support if you usually sleep on your stomach - in this case, we recommend combining your firm to medium-firm mattress with a flat pillow.

When buying new bedding, the question most often asked is: which mattress for back pain? We often hear that a firm mattress is the best choice. But this is not always the case. In some cases - rheumatism, for example - it's quite the opposite. To decide between a soft, medium-firm or firm mattress, don't hesitate to ask your osteopath for advice!

A level of firmness adapted to your morphology

Your height and weight are the two key factors in choosing the right mattress. So you need to pay attention to both the firmness level and the size of the mattress. Sleeping on a mattress that's too small will restrict your choice of pillow - a large square model will be too bulky.

Which mattress is right for an overweight person? We recommend a firm or semi-firm spring mattress, ideally with comfort zones - i.e. specific zones adapted to the heaviest limbs, such as the head or pelvis. If you're over 1.75 m tall, opt for a 140 x 200 mattress, which provides great comfort for a single sleeper, or go for a 160 x 200, or even a 180 x 200 for two people.

If you're of average build and appreciate rather firm support, go for a latex mattress - softer than a spring mattress. Once again, take your height into account when choosing the size of your mattress.

To narrow down your choice, don't hesitate to consult a mattress comparison!

Which mattress to choose during pregnancy?

A soft to medium-firm mattress can be uncomfortable when you're expecting a baby. Pregnancy is accompanied by gradual weight gain. And without the right support, the weight of your belly can cause severe back pain. So which mattress is right for pregnant women? Ideally, a semi-firm mattress that gives you more support, while remaining fairly supple.

Do you love your current mattress, especially as it's almost new? While you're waiting for baby, try a mattress topper.

A firm or semi-soft mattress for children?

Now that we've covered all the issues for grown-ups, there's one question that remains: which children's mattress should I choose? And how firm should it be? Well, that depends above all on the child's age.

In the case of a baby, making the right choice is a question of safety. Babies should sleep on their backs, to limit the risk of suffocation and cot death. Around the age of 6 months, they start to turn over. But be careful: most babies start by rolling onto their stomachs before they learn to do the opposite. So it's essential to choose a firm mattress, so that once baby is on his tummy, he doesn't risk sinking into the mattress!

When a child starts to sleep in a ‘big bed’, it's generally advisable to opt for a foam or latex mattress. As they grow, it's vital for children to have optimum support for their spine. So avoid a soft mattress or one that's too firm, and opt for medium-firm support.

Good to know: viscoelastic memory foam mattresses are generally not recommended for children. One of the reasons given for this is that memory foam encourages perspiration - which is no longer entirely true, thanks to the latest generation materials (to find out more: Memory foam mattresses: advantages and disadvantages). Children in particular are still growing, so it's best not to ‘mould’ their bodies while they're sleeping!

Characteristics of latex mattresses

he term ‘latex mattress’ can refer to a natural latex mattress, made from the sap of the rubber tree or a synthetic latex mattress, made using a petrochemical process.

A latex mattress is unique in that it is both soft and firm. This anti-mite and anti-bacterial mattress is exceptionally resistant to moisture, so it is recommended for people who tend to perspire a lot during their sleep or in a bedroom with a high level of humidity.

Contrary to popular belief, a latex mattress is not a foam mattress.

However, its texture is quite similar to that of foam, and it is its density that determines whether it is firm or semi-firm.

The special features of spring mattresses

There are two types of innerspring mattress:
• The twin-tapered innerspring mattress
• The pocketed innerspring mattress

As its name suggests, the pocketed innerspring mattress is made up of a multitude of springs wrapped in individual fabric bags. This gives you remarkably precise support, as it follows your movements perfectly.
The bi-conical spring mattress is made up of springs in the shape of two opposing cones.

You're probably wondering, how many pocket springs make a good mattress? That depends on the size of the mattress, of course! But the more springs a mattress has, the more comfortable it is. As a guide, you should expect to find between 600 and 700 springs for a 140 x 190 cm mattress.

In addition to its tonic support, the spring mattress is the type of mattress that offers the best independence of sleep. If you sleep with two people, there's no doubt about it: this is the mattress for you! Like the latex mattress, it benefits from superior air circulation, especially when combined with a breathable ticking such as bamboo. Good to know: to adopt an innerspring mattress, you need to have an innerspring base.

What about the futon?

In recent years, people have been falling for bedrooms with a Zen atmosphere and Japanese-inspired decor. Naturally, it's tempting to give in to the temptation of the futon, especially for those looking for firm to medium-firm support. However, many physiotherapists and osteopaths advise against this choice. A firm or medium-firm mattress should never be confused with a hard mattress. You don't want to sink into it, but you still want a soft, enveloping feel, depending on your tastes!

Hybrid mattress technology is the perfect choice for a firm to medium-firm mattress

During your search for the perfect firm to medium-firm mattress, you may have wondered where to buy a mattress? The answer is simple, from a bedding specialist.

Because, as you'll have realised, your choice of mattress is not something to be taken lightly. When it comes to firm to medium-firm mattresses, you can find so-called ‘hybrid’ mattresses, which combine several technologies: foam and latex, foam and springs...or even foam, latex and springs.

This type of hybrid mattress is particularly recommended if you decide to opt for a firm to medium-firm mattress, because, let's face it, firmness is not the same as hardness!

The combination of several technologies ensures exceptional comfort, combining firm support with the sensation of lying on a cloud.
